For pretty Junie Mae
He loved her twangy country voice
And hair the color of hay
Her legs were bowed and skinny, too
Her eyes as round as taters
Jim Bob got to thinkin’ hard
So he pulled on his hip waders
He’d had enough of bachelorhood
And howlin’ at the moon
Miss Junie Mae would be his bride
He’d make it happen soon
The night was dark, the bullfrogs sang
The swamp was wide and thick
But Jim Bob waded through the slush
And gave the stumps a kick
But one of them raised up a head
It wasn’t a stump at all
Jim Bob saw the rows of teeth
And then began the brawl
A gator lunged for Jim Bob’s chest
But he was very quick
He jumped up on the gator’s back
And never missed a lick
He rode the gator cowboy style
Till the gator wore plum out
Jim Bob climbed down off his back
And thumped him on the snout
Junie Mae was worth the ride
The gator didn’t phase him
When he told her what he’d done
He knew that she would praise him
He had a scrape and a bruise or two
But Junie Mae was waitin’
He planned to go and snatch her up
Why waste time with datin’?
He saw smoke from Junie’s chimney
And flashed a gap-toothed grin
He slicked his hair back with his spit
To look sharp when he walked in
But when he hiked on up the trail
He stopped and stared ahead
Cletus Elrod Parker the third
Had beat him there instead
Cletus held sweet Junie’s hand
And snapped his suspenders proudly
That’s when Jim Bob gave a sigh
But he didn’t do it loudly
He refused to let it bother him
So Jim Bob turned to go
He had no future with Junie Mae
But there’s something you should know
Miss Maybelle lived on up the hill
So Jim Bob went to her house
She let him in, served him gator tail
And soon became his spouse.
