Dances along with a warm spring wind
Above long green blades of meadow grass.
Red silk ribbons dangle like kite tails
As the daisy scented breeze guides
Gram’s gardening hat toward the river.
Faint past images of blonde tresses
And white cotton dresses twirl and spin
Laughing in the rustling sea of grass.
The whisking wind takes a short respite
Gram’s bonnet alights at river’s edge
Swaying reeds sing a song of first love.
A young man and woman sit closely
Splashing tan bare feet as they giggle
Eyes meet, close, lips draw near, a first kiss.
The returning breeze nudges gram’s hat
Now floating, sailing, drifting downstream
Toward a white chapel at river’s bend.
Hymns flutter from the church’s windows
A covey of doves soar Heavenward
Glory, Glory, to our King on High.
At river’s bend, the guiding zephyr
Lifts the hat back into its grasp
Landing at the church’s stone garden.
Preachers’ echoing voices proclaim
Ashes to ashes and dust to dust
Gram’s bonnet tours rows of granite graves.
The warm spring breeze now weakens and cools
Red roses, bouquets of wild daisies
Adorn Pa’s, now Gram’s, memorial.
The old golden straw, sun bleached bonnet
Now rests in peace on freshly cut sod
From the meadow of gram’s long green grass.

Now for this charming poem...what lovely images, and the journey of the bonnet through this woman's life is a very charming touch! Sort of reminds me of the feather in "Forrest Gump." So nice!
