My workday begins in just a little while, and I rejoice to say that I believe I have the best job in the world. I was privileged with this position not long after I got off the boat and settled in my picturesque island home not far from the lapping water’s edge. Even though I am of foreign birth, I am now an American from head to toe and am so honored to dwell in my adopted homeland. Where else could an immigrant woman encounter such wondrous possibilities and make such a difference in her sphere of influence? Nowhere! I work in governmental public relations and relish being surrounded with people and activity all day. I am proud to serve the United States of America in my own personal way and will never stop as long as I am allowed the chance.
I continue observing the battalion of buildings marching up and down the city’s skyline and marvel at what man has accomplished. Yes, I’ve seen my share of sad and bad and even terrible things over the years, but there is such a persevering hopefulness here that refuses to be squashed by life’s complexities and vagaries. “God Bless America” is a prayer that has definitely been answered over and over.
The sun grows warmer and brighter, and I know the first of the day’s guests to our visitors’ center will be walking up to the doors soon, but I am ready to greet them. We never lack for tourists, and our guestbook is crowded with names from every state of the union and every corner of the world—some being distinguished dignitaries but most being the hard-working, honest-hearted citizens, who toil in the factories, teach in the schools, minister in the hospitals, build the homes, lay the highways, prepare the meals, work in the offices, farm the land, and manage the businesses that keep this nation moving onward and forward. Their ancestral roots run deep in the soil of every part of this globe and enhance our culture with diverse flavors and customs. I welcome each one of them and appreciate their presence!
Ah! Here comes the first group up the pathway now. I am pleased to see it is made up of grade school children. I exult in their eager curiosity and will do my best to help them understand the freedoms and opportunities we are blessed with in this country. I see myself as one of their teachers, too, with an important lesson to impart while they are under my care. If they do not learn it well, I fear for the future. However, will they listen to an older-generation lady like me, who adheres to what many consider as antiquated values? The world is changing faster than ever. I myself have witnessed an astounding amount of alteration and transformation in my years here. Will they feel that I have something…anything…relevant to share?
Just yesterday, though, a little girl with bouncy blonde pigtails and eyes as blue as the sky, turned back toward me as she was skipping away after a tour with her parents. She waved enthusiastically, shouting with a gap-toothed grin and an endearing lisp, “Good-bye, Mith Liberty!”
I kept a firm grip on the torch in my right hand, holding it steadily aloft in respectful salute.
