A ladies’ meeting coming up,
Was asked to sing with Mary Ann.
Did not like that idea, though,
I nearly turned away and ran.

It’s just that women in the church
All think that she’s so wonderful.
Some days it nearly makes me sick.
Myself, I think she’s rather dull.

They say that she’s quite talented,
She’s into crafts, sews all her clothes.
Domestic one with dainty touch,
And makes her soap, I would suppose.

Won’t be outdone by “Lady Fru” -
I mean how hard can sewing be?
I’ll make nice blouse for our duet,
She’ll look so frumpy next to me.

With pattern, fabric, thread and all,
I get out dusty old machine.
The ladies will be so impressed,
And all their eyes will be on me.

Cut pattern out and start to pin
To lovely fabric that I bought.
It’s crinkled up and shifting ‘round,
Not laying out quite like it ought.

I guess I’ll have to start again,
Although I hate to do things twice.
But if I’m careful, take my time,
I know that it will turn out nice.

With fabric cut, I’ll thread machine -
My goodness, what a tiny eye.
Can barely see to thread the thing,
But since I’ve come this far, I’ll try.

Ten minutes later, here I am,
I’m finally ready to proceed –
Few stitches, thread from bobbin breaks.
Oh splendid, this is all I need!

I tell myself relax, calm down,
Correct the problem, start again.
Does not take long to realize
This old machine is not my friend.

Material is bunching up,
It’s stuck and I can’t get it loose.
I tug and pull and try again,
The thing won’t budge, oh fidderdo!

With nostrils flared and gritted teeth,
I guess that sewing’s not my thing!
I thought I had the patience, but
I now feel I’m unraveling!

So Mary Ann can sew, big deal,
At least that’s what I used to think.
But now I see it’s hard to do
And takes a woman to the brink!

A simple project and I thought
That it would go without a hitch,
That blouse would almost sew itself,
But here I am, just plain unstitched!

I’m stewing, now what will I wear?
No money left, I spent it all
On flashy fabric for that blouse
That made me lose my wherewithal.

Go through my closet - this will do,
To sing the song with Mary Ann.
So plain, but best of all I have -
This didn’t go as I had planned.

The special ladies’ day has come,
And here we are, we’re next to sing.
Can’t wait until duet is done,
But “Lady Fru” is smiling.

Perhaps it isn’t all that bad,
And I will try and do my best
To lift my voice to God the King -
I’ll praise regardless how I’m dressed.

I look out to the women here,
I can’t believe what’s happening.
With upraised hands, their eyes are closed,
See they aren’t here to “watch” me sing.

Enjoy the rest of meeting time,
Left shocked by comments afterwards,
By those who said they met with God
Because of our angelic words.

I’m grateful that God used me still,
Stand humbled by His love and grace,
That He would use my singing to
Bring others into holy place.

And “Lady Fru” did nothing wrong,
Was truly my own jealousy.
Instead of focusing on Him,
I wanted ladies’ eyes on me.

Of sewing project I will say,
I’m glad it didn’t go as planned -
I’ve learned what is important, plus
Have new respect for Mary Ann.

Reflect on whole experience,
This bunched up blouse I’ll always save,
Will serve as a reminder of
The sewing lesson that He gave.
