I straightened from my search when a man called to me, “Please bring me a cup of water. I’m thirsty.”
He looked tired and dusty as he walked through the gates, so I started toward my house.
“Wait,” he cried out, “Bring me a little bread too.” The LORD God had commanded me to provide for the prophet, Elijah, when he came, but I had so little food.
“I have but a handful of flour and a bit of oil, just enough for my son and myself. I’m gathering these sticks so I can prepare the food. After that, we’ll die”
“Don’t fear, cook a little bit for me first. The LORD God of Israel has told me that you won’t run out of flour or oil ‘til the day He sends rain. You will continue to have enough.”
I made his bread first and gave him water; he ate and drank. When I looked in the bin, there was still enough for my son and me. There continued to be enough every day, just as the LORD God promised.
In America, I am hearing, “I’ve had enough,” from all different quarters:
“Enough isolation in my room because of Covid19,” by residents in Assisted Living and Continuing Care where my husband and I live.
The Republicans have had enough of what they saw as the other party changing the rules and cheating on the Presidential election.
Extremists took advantage of a peaceful protest, stormed our capitol, entered, and committed insurrection acts.
Brokenhearted, I cried out to God, “When will You have enough of the sin and rebellion? When will Christ return for those who have accepted Him as their Lord and Savior?” He calmed my heart and reminded me that He would wait until the last person to receive the gift of his death and resurrection for their si"ns did so. Then He would return and bring justice.
We live in a cottage, so we are not as restricted as those who live in the main building. However, we are both eighty-two years old. Also, I am at high risk for covid19; I use oxygen 24/7 and have a congestive heart. So, I stay home, and my husband does the grocery shopping.
"But for me, it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord God my refuge, that I may tell of all His works. (Psalm 73:28 NLT) He tells us to love one another the way He has loved us. (John 13:34) We are to love and pray for our enemies. (Matthew 5:44) God says, in Psalm 5:22, that He will sustain (provide enough for) me; He will never permit the righteous to be moved.
So my plan is to do what God says, stay close to him, and tell others what He has done. I choose to encourage others, pray for them, and tell them about the love of God. I will pray for those who are showing such hate for Christians and, by His strength, stand firm on God’s promises.
When I read in Isaiah 43:2, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, Nor shall the flame consume you,” my confidence in God grew. I was afraid until I read these verses. The news was scaring me, so now I watch less news and read my Bible more. When starting to withdraw, I think about other people’s needs; I send notes to those who are shut-in.
When we have enough pandemics and politics, we can turn to the LORD and find that He is enough to meet all our needs.
