Who Am I?
by
Tana Craig
I AM WOMAN has already been done
And besides, with a lot of my equipment obsolete
or out of commission,
I’m not sure I am.
I was woman for a time after I was girl,
but it was so short, and not so sweet a time,
that it had passed before I realized I’d had it.
‘I’ve had it’ expresses how I felt,
some days,
when I was young, and the one I was having it with
was trying to knock it out of me.
I got a son from a borrowed womb,
and for a wonderful season, I was Mother.
That job ended with no gold watch or blare of trumpet to
announce its demise.
And here I am, mature female, with no clear job description,
and most of my teeth.
I am a five-foot bundle of dynamite
disguised as a senior citizen.
I have the heart of an explorer,
the soul of a poet,
the love of a dear man,
and a relationship with my Creator.
I am eternal.
It is enough.
