From the girl with the lilac colored hair to the fellow with the pink shoes, there was much to catch my attention. Since this was a commencement for the Fine Arts Department, their talents shone in decorating their mortar boards. Several were surrounded with wreaths of flowers while one young man’s was adorned with a tall “Uncle Sam” hat. A mortarboard I liked had in bold letters MOM. . .or maybe that was WOW.
As the graduates received their diplomas, some marched, some strutted, and some danced across the stage, but all displayed happy smiles. Some of the girls with extremely high heels seemed to glide as comfortably as those with flip flops. Ah youth!
For all my observations, my true focus was on one special graduate, my granddaughter. I had loved her as a delightful child, and, even more, as the beautiful Christian young woman she has become. My heart overflowed with her gladness in this day and with my delight in being able to share this occasion with my beloved family.
The commencement speaker urged the seniors to love, dream, and believe. I wondered what counsel I could give my granddaughter as she leaves college behind and goes out into such a troubled world. Then it came to me—there is no better advice than Jesus gave in verses 37 and 39 of Matthew 22: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. . .You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
If my granddaughter will heed His words, her life will be blessed always with the presence of the Lord, and she will make a difference for good in her world. What is more, she will have the “blessed hope” of an eternity with God.
