Despite exposure to
The onslaughts of the arsenal
Of nature’s transient whims.
In days of drought,
Streaming rays of relentless sun
Crinkle and wrinkle
Her delicate blooms
And shrivel
Her purple perfection.
When come the storms,
Punishing drops of rain
Pelt mercilessly down
To tear her tender petals.
She dances lightly to
The tune of the wind
Till its lilting breath
Becomes a ferocious blast,
That twists her slender stalk
And blows her beaten blossoms
Onto the soggy ground—
Mangled bits of color
And light aroma,
To be stomped on
By a careless boot.
Her stem, though bent,
Is not broken,
And she is still alive.
From the sustenance
Found in her roots,
New buds arrive.
With sleepy eyes
To greet a gentler sun
And welcome with
Sheltering green leaves
Soft rains of nourishment.
And then as she stands open
To the healing touch of nature,
Sweet violet revives.
