“Hi, Bethany. Could you pray for me? I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed right now. Our plans have changed so fast, and honestly, I just don’t know how to take it. It’s kind of strange. I thought we would have more time, but Devin’s leaving for Texas in two weeks, and he’s not coming back for six months. I'm probably not making much sense, but we… Oh, it looks like he’s here and he has a…Reeeeeeeeeennnng!”

Bethany stared at the phone and listened to the message again. She wasn’t sure if she’d heard right the first time, but it sounded like a scream at the end. Linda was one of her best friends and this sounded serious. She just had to call Gloria.
“Glory, I just got a message from Linda, asking for prayer for her and Devin. Sounds like things aren’t going well. She said he’s acting strange and threatening to leave for Texas and not come back, and that she can’t take it anymore. I think she was crying. The scary thing is that while she was trying to tell me what was wrong, he showed up. She was screaming that he had something. I know she was at the house to unpack her dishes. I’m wondering if I should call the police or just go over to see if she’s in trouble. Be in prayer, and call the pastor.”

Gloria was shaking when she called Jenny. She was best friends with Linda and Devin. This was not at all what she was expecting to hear.
“Jen, we have to pray for Linda and Devin, right now! They’ve had a fight, and he’s throwing dishes at her, and Bethany’s going over because she’s afraid he’s going to drag Linda off to Texas and not come back. I can hardly believe it. I mean, I thought they just bought that house and were planning to get married later. Maybe we should go over with Bethy in case it’s really bad. It’s possible that he has a gun and has locked the two of them in the house or something. He is a Marine. I’m really scared for her. It’s serious enough that she wants us to call the pastor.”

When Gloria hung up, Jenny nearly dropped her phone in her haste to dial their pastor. She had never been involved in a real hostage situation before, but she had always been told she was a good negotiator. Besides, Linda was her best friend; she would do anything for her.
“Pastor Grady, I just heard that Linda and Devin are having serious problems. I guess he wanted her to move to Texas with him or something, but she refused, and now he’s gone crazy. Gloria thinks that he just showed up with one of his guns and is holding Linda against her will. She and Bethany and I are going to go over to see what we can do to help. I know you probably are really busy, but Linda wanted us to let you to know what’s happening. This is serious! Please be in prayer.”

Pastor Grady had started writing a sermon for Sunday morning, but his thoughts strayed to Devin and Linda. The young Marine had to leave early for his Special Forces training in Texas, and since their situation was unique, they had asked to be married at the end of the week. Devin had stopped by earlier to show him the ring he’d bought for Linda. He was on his way over to the new house to surprise her, and it was easy to imagine how excited she would be when she saw it.
Just then, the answering machine shattered the quiet with messages from Linda’s friends. Pastor Grady shook his head as he listened. He studied the phone for a moment, his hand poised to call them back. Then a smile crept up around the corners of his lips. But why spoil the fun? He got out a new sheet of paper, instead.
