A cheering crowd
And hold the trophy high
You see me smile
You watch me wave
But do not hear me sigh
For I would swap
My life for yours
Give up this winner’s place
See the cameras
Focussed on
Another person’s face
This pedestal
I fought to claim
To carve my name upon
I took such pride
Embraced the praise
For all the things I’d won
The cost I paid
An eager slave
To press, to push, to run
Somewhere along
The played out path
A tiredness had begun
Convinced that joy
Would surely come
I fought to win each game
But empty now
And hollow feel
With no one I can blame
There must be more
That satisfies
That meets my deepest need
That silences
The urgent voice
That says “I must succeed”
The world bestows
Upon a man
It’s riches, fortune, fame
But never is
The measure of
The worth a man can claim
