Growing up in the 1960s, my perception of the ideal woman played out on old black-and-white television programs. She dressed in pearls and heels to do housework. Her home was immaculate, and she could cook delicious meals ready to eat as soon as hubby arrived from work. She was always there for her husband. She was wise in counsel to her children and unnaturally patient.

What normal female does that?

In my teen years during the 1970s, TV commercials told women they could do it all. Entering the workforce in 1974, I noted that most commuters on the road were men. Being in the medical field, I noted that the staff consisted mainly of females -- raised to believe that all women were nurturers. The media proclaimed that females could hold down a job and then return home to scrub the house spotless while raising a well-mannered family.

What normal woman does that?

In my 20s, a TV commercial for perfume showcased an attractive woman stuffed inside a slinky dress, proudly strutting as she sang how she could bring home the bacon, fry it in a pan, and then take care of her man.

I finally realized that the media lies.
