In those moments before being wheeled to the delivery room I remember thinking, “In just a few minutes the whole dynamics of our little family may change. If this baby is a boy, the toy box will begin to store toy trucks and cars, more balls and tool-type toys. Closets will be allotted for little boy pants, shirts, and ball caps.”
It is interesting how our Creator created the two genders with characteristics particular to each. “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27 NIV) There are certain behaviors and roles that we consider to be either feminine or masculine.
While we recognize these differences, the Apostle Paul proclaims that people are the same in some ways. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28 NIV). Here he was reminding the Believers that it did not matter who someone was, or what position they held in society, all who believed in Christ were sons, or the same.
While we want to celebrate all being one in Christ, our present society is trying to put a different spin on this concept. We are being bombarded with the idea that on this earth we can be whatever we feel we want to be, no matter our physical make-up. And it is causing a multitude of problems in our schools, sports, and society.
This is a teaching we need to be very careful about embracing. You may be asking, “What should I believe? How tolerant must I be?” I urge you to earnestly search and read God’s Word, seek the advice of creditable teachers and professionals, and spend time talking to our Father in Heaven, in order to make God-honoring, practical decisions on this issue.
If we conscientiously study God’s Word, meditate on It, and pray for His insight, I believe it will become quite clear what our position should be.
When welcoming the birth of our second child, I need not have been concerned about a drastic change in our family dynamics. Our new little one was another girl. In fact, as our family grew, there were four girls and no boys. Although there were balls, a few little cars, and building blocks, the toy box and closets were definitely girl-oriented, until years later when our grandsons began arriving!
