Some sheep and a staff were all he had.
While keeping watch o'er his flock one day,
A big, mighty lion a visit did pay.
That boy named David knew just what to do,
By the beard he flung it and away it flew.
Then one day a bear came along,
Met the same fate; didn't look very strong.
Now with his harp David had a way,
For old king Saul he liked to play.
When evil spirits overcame Saul,
David's music would make them fall
Israel's army was in really big trouble,
A challenger they needed, on the double!
The Philistines' weapon was a very large man,
Saul fainted when he saw him; get him a fan!
Nine feet tall was Goliath's full height,
He gave Israel's army quite a fright.
"Who will fight him?" Everyone asked,
While big Goliath in his pride basked.
"I'll go, King Saul," little David said,
"You? You're smaller than his head!"
" I've killed a lion and bear,"
"Use my armor. It's over there."
"I don't need it. It will weight me down.
In its metal I would drown!"
"Take my sword; without it you'll die!"
"I don't need it. The Lord is on my side!"
With a sling and stones David went to the line,
"With the Lord this battle is mine!"
Goliath laughed, "Why he's merely a boy!
What do I look like, an old dog's toy?"
David took his sling and a little stone,
With great force that stone was thrown!
It stuck Goliath in the middle of his head,
He started to sway, "Timber! He's dead!"
They cut off his head, put it on a stick,
A tradition that makes me a wee bit sick!
The army ran to David, coming in hoards,
"Remember," he said, "The battle is the Lord's!"
