Although we do not know the exact time of the morning when Jesus appeared to his disciples after his resurrection, and had a morning meal with them; we do know that brunch is usually a morning meal that occurs after normal breakfast hours and before lunch hours. So, it is possible that this meal held in John chapter 21 between Jesus and his disciples, could have been held at a morning hour considered to be a brunch hour. Brunch is like a late breakfast. According to “What Would Jesus Eat?” at loyolapress.com, the Jews during Jesus’ time would not normally eat meat (fish) for breakfast during the morning hours.
“Each day began with a light breakfast of bread or a piece of fruit. Bread was kneaded and baked every day, one of the mother’s main chores. At midday, those in the Holy Land would eat a light lunch of bread, grain, olives, and figs. The main meal was eaten at the end of the day.” (They usually didn’t eat meat until dinner time.) “Dinner was a one pot stew served in a common bowl. Bread was used to spoon the stew. The stew might be a thick porridge of vegetables, lentils, or chickpeas, spiced with herbs. Meat was only served occasionally, fish most often, mostly when the family had an important guest,” (What Would Jesus Eat? at loyolopress.com/catholicresources).
Jesus was the important guest that would be sharing a meal with his family of disciples in John chapter 21. “After these things, Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias. He revealed himself this way. Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, “I’m going fishing.” “They told him, “we are also coming with you.” “They immediately went out and entered into the boat. That night, they caught nothing. But when day had already come, Jesus stood on the beach: yet the disciples didn’t know that it was Jesus. Jesus therefore said to them, “Children have you anything to eat?” “They answered him, “No.” “He said to them, “cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” “They cast it therefore and now they weren’t able to draw it in for the multitude of fish. That disciple therefore whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It’s the Lord,” (John 21:1-6).
“So when they got out on the land, they saw a fire of coals there, with fish and bread laid on it. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.” “Simon Peter went up and drew the net to land, full of one hundred fifty-three great fish …” “Jesus said to them, “Come and eat breakfast!” “None of the disciples dared inquire of him, “Who are you?” “Knowing that it was the Lord,” (John 21:9-12). “This is now the third time that Jesus was revealed to his disciples after he had risen from the dead,” (John 21:14). Scripture does not tell us what hour in the morning that the disciples ate this meal with the Lord Jesus. It could have been late morning, which would make it a late breakfast or brunch meal. We know that meat was not usually served in the morning but, bread was eaten at all meals. This was, however, a breakfast meal with meat because the disciples were dining with an important guest, our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ. The disciples were family to Christ. We, too, are also a part of the family of Christ.
