People ran away from the bellowing smoke
A fire lit to prove a juvenile’s joke
Screams of help and chaos filled the air
As the fire engines rushed and sirens blared
Julius was old and staggered out, gasping for breath
As he watched destroyed, his home, life’s work and sweat
Tears streamed down his aged face
As he contemplated his fall from grace
A boy of 14 was responsible the police said
Always running in with the law, a record in red
Parents he did not have, his only aunt was on coke
Lighting up fires was his way of cracking a joke
As the courtroom gathered to decide the boys’ fate
Julius tapped his fingers on the table to pass his long wait
His life hadn’t been a fairytale, a dream fable
The crowd hushed as a disheveled boy was dragged to the defendant’s table.
Julius eyes suddenly clouded with tears in pain
Of how such a young life would be lost in vain
He pleaded that no sentence be given to the boy
But let he be helped to build back his pride and joy
The boy jerked his head and looked up perplexed
No one before ever asked him for his help
The judge sat back in confused thoughtfulness
Maybe community service is what the boy missed
The boy was assigned to community service
And into the complete custody of Julius
The silence was stark as the car rode along the highway
The boy sat in the back not looking up once all the way
As Julius pulled into the gutted driveway
The boy opened his mouth for something to say
But only sobs broke forth from his face contorted in pain
“Son” said Julius “only from hard work there is something to gain”.
The neighbors swore they heard laughter everyday
From the site where Julius and the boy stayed
And days passed into weeks and weeks into months
A magnificent building rose into the sun
One day the little boy sat at the dinner table quiet
It was after the building was over and workers left the site
Julius looked and found the boy hunched over in obvious distress
“I have to go back now and my whole life again will be in a complete mess”
Said Julius “No Son, that will not be”
I have asked for legal custody
“Why me” asked the boy, I destroyed everything
Said Julius “Son in you I have Confidence”
If I had sought to punish you dear
You would have grown to know no fear
But when in you I placed my confidence
Your life was turned around by divine providence.
Do what you must to help someone out
Cast away your fear and doubts
For even if you think your deeds will not a broken soul mend
Remember someone above has in you unfailing confidence.
