The day that changed my life started as a normal day; I sat in my tent minding my own business, helping my wife prepare the manna we had just gathered. A condition took me, making me dizzy and filled with emotions I had never experienced. I slumped to one knee on the dirt floor of our tent and watched visions in my head: measurements, angles, designs, textures of fabric, smoothness of stones, pain of splinters in my hands, an unbelievable structure taking shape right before my eyes. And I, leading others in its building.
My heart longed for tools and burned for the heat of a furnace. Ears and eyes strained to hear the ring of a hammer, and to see sparks fly as metal obeyed my command. My mind saw shapes and smelled wood unknown to me, and I swayed back and forth under a supernatural spell; no; it was not a spell, not something that would ever wear off. I became the things I saw; I knew how to create these things yet did not know why until Yahweh revealed his purpose to me.
I am a craftsman by trade, but what happened to me that day was incomprehensible. The door to all possibilities opened up to me. Before I heard Moses’ voice, I knew what he would ask. Sweat poured out of my body as the old me melted away and I became a new, stronger, focused me. I, Bezalel the craftsman, chosen and filled with the Holy Spirit, became available to build the Lord’s Tabernacle.
Building anything of importance takes planning and detailed instruction, and time. Yahweh laid out the plans for Moses. The people of the Lord provided the material and tools, in fact so much that the command to stop went out. The day the Lord filled me with his Holy Spirit, work began. Mighty God saw fit to provide me with a helper, a competent craftsman from the tribe of Dan. With Oholiab’s support and the help of the nations of Israel, God’s holy dwelling place took its prominent place in the middle of our camp in less than six months.
The day the Ark of the Covenant moved to the Holy of Holies, all the tribes gathered. The air filled with awe and dread of the presence of Yahweh. I still get goosebumps when I think back on the day our God first dwelled with us in the tabernacle that He had trusted me to build. Humbled by the appointment, I owe all I am to the living God, The Great I Am. Praise be to Yahweh.
Exodus 31:2-6.
