“Hi Kate! How was school today?” my mom asks, smiling.
How is she always so chipper at this time of day? “It was fine, I don’t know. I don’t really want to talk about it,” I mumble, quickly.
“Ok, here you go,” my mom hands me a milkshake that she brings me every Friday after school.
“Thanks mom,” I take a sip of the cool, sugary ice cream and my senses are rejuvenated. I really have the best mom ever.
“Hey mom, do you think I could go see the new Snow White movie when it comes out with Amy? Everyone is talking about it right now.”
“Oh Kate,” my mom begins, sighing. “There seems to be a lot of issues with that movie. As long as we discuss these problems, you can go see it.”
“What’s wrong with it?” I ask.
“Well, they are changing the movie so it’s not like the original fairy tale. They did not cast the seven dwarfs as little people. They cast them as a very diverse group so that they could represent as many different people groups as possible. Also, although Snow White has skin as white as snow, the actress does not have that skin tone.”
“What is so wrong with representing a bunch of different groups of people so everyone feels represented and included?” I ask.
“Well, I don’t think they are actually successful at representing everyone. What kind of message are they sending to people with shorter stature?”
“Well, I guess they can’t represent every people group on the planet, and it might be kind of an insult to little people who aren’t represented very often to begin with,” I say, thoughtfully. “I guess I haven’t thought about it that way before.”
“Elevating certain groups to even things out, hurts others in the process, causing more division.” My mom replies. “They are sending the message that some groups are more worthy than others.”
“That just seems weird. I don’t get it. Wanting equality is a good thing though.”
“Ok here’s an example. Females are being celebrated right now, while males, particularly white males, are heavily criticized. I’m not saying that there is no inequality between the genders, but just that this is the wrong way of dealing with it.”
“That is because of the way men treat women. Maybe men should just be different.”
“The inequality we experience is a result of our sin nature. If we all loved others the way God wants us to, we wouldn’t have all this conflict, but at most, our human solutions are only placing a Band-Aid on a bleeding wound. Now, what do you think the Bible says about equality?”
“Well, God made all of us in His image: male, female, white, black, and brown, so we are all equal in his eyes.” I respond.
“Yes, the world categorizes people as either victim or oppressor, but we don’t all fit neatly into these groups. We are individuals, not stereotypes. Now, in the Kingdom of God, we are the same. We are all equal in our sin, but Jesus offers salvation freely to everyone who believes in him. Galatians 3:28 says, ‘There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.’ This is what true equality looks like.
Also, when we become children of God, we suddenly serve a different master. What people say about us matters little, while what God says about us becomes the most important thing. When we fully realize our status as image bearers of God, we see that God made us perfectly the way we are. People are constantly looking for love, acceptance, and identity, but our worth does not depend on other people’s thoughts and actions. Our identity is found in Christ, and when we know who we are, we are confident in our identity and more likely to overlook an offense as Proverbs 19:11 advises us to do. People will never satisfy us completely, but God will.”
“Well, you’ve given me a lot to think about mom,” I say, as I slurp the rest of my milkshake. “Thanks. I’ll be keeping this in mind when we go see the movie.”
