Sunday night, Eagle Rock, California, my clothes were on the closet floor, again. Five- year- old Hope was NOT happy to be put out of her bedroom by a friend of her Mother. She would hang her things back up. I jokingly called her "Hopeless," but never out loud. Who could blame her? I usurped her room and part of her Mother's attention.
During the week, I stayed at their house with my son so both of us could finish the school year, finish school, and went home to my husband in the high desert on weekends. To make matters more complicated, my son would go to the beach every other weekend to be with his father.
It was gracious of my Christian friend and college buddy to let us stay with her, a single Mom, and her two children.
Hope is an adult now. She is a dynamic prayer warrior who loves sharing her faith in Jesus.
For myself, Christ in me is my hope of glory (Col.1:27.) It is a sure and certain hope that grows as I experience His faithfulness.
That summer, the two of us moved sixty miles north of Los Angeles to a home my husband and I were buying in the high desert. I left my school, my job, and my birth family and friends. Everything changed for my son too. And Jim? He kept his career but traveled 120 miles round trip, five days per week, to Burbank.
Our affordable house, rented to a single Mom to cover the payments, was a unique experience. The tenant turned our three-bedroom home into a daycare center. The rent arrived, usually late, made up of loose change, currency, checks, and money orders. She and her two teenage daughters moved out with no notice. We moved into a mess. It looked hopeless, but with God, ALL things are possible.
I opened the oven door, and it came off in my hand. All the interior walls needed re-surfacing. We painted, laid new flooring, replaced the fixtures and lighting in the main bathroom.
We did everything ourselves, learning as we went along. The insolation company could not get a team willing to travel that far. Jim and I put on masks (way pre-covid19) and acted as the team, feeding insolation into the hopper as the owner blew it into the attic.
Hope in God never disappoints. We finished all the work, and the results were remarkable.
We had an inviting home on a corner lot. When we were ready to move, we sold quickly for enough profit to put down on a residence in another neighborhood, closer to my work.
"Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.” Is.40:31
