He looked her in the eyes and nodded his affirmation.
“Can I have everyone’s attention, please?” Ken waited for the room to get quiet before he began.
“First of all, we just want to thank you all for supporting us through this time. Gina wrote this letter and she wanted you all to hear it before we go further in the service.”
Ken cleared his throat, and then began.
“To my precious son, For so many months, I have been looking forward to the time that I could hold you in my arms. We prayed so long for you and when we found out that you were coming, there was a new excitement in our lives.
“We started preparing right away. We bought a baby bed that you could sleep in, a baby stroller that I could take you for walks in, and even a baby tub so that your first baths would be comfortable for you. I knitted blankets and booties and cute little hats. I couldn’t wait to wrap you up in the things that I’d poured my time and love into.
“As my belly grew, my love for you grew too. I spent hours dreaming about the things that we would do together as a family. I imagined us sitting on our pew in church, so happy to have an addition to our church family.
“I thought about how Hannah cried for a baby and when the Lord blessed her, she gave him back to the Lord. What a blessing that was for her. I couldn’t wait to do that too.
“Finally the day came when the pains began and I knew that you would be with us soon. I was so happy and scared all at the same time. You weren't due for three weeks, but when I talked with the doctor she told me that everything would be fine. I began to pray that the Lord would keep us both safe during the delivery.
“I am holding you now, as I write these words. I’m happy that you are in my arms, but I know that I can’t keep you for long. You are such a beautiful baby. You have your daddy’s nose and mouth, and you have my eyes and hands. Your skin is so pretty. Flawless.
“When they first put you in my arms, I counted your fingers and toes. Just like every other mom. You looked perfect. I guess you were too perfect for this world.
“I always wondered how it felt for God to give His only Son. I still can’t imagine giving a son. But I know now how it is to lose one.
“I always wanted your first service in church to be a dedication service. We, as parents, dedicating you back to the Lord, and that’s exactly what it will be. All of your family will be there. Your grandmas, grandpas, aunts, uncles, cousins, and our church friends will all be there. The preacher will be preaching about a Son that died so many years ago so that one day we can see each other again. We will embrace and I will once again hold you in my arms. Until then, my son, I will cherish the memories I have. I will try to always remember the way you felt in my arms, the smell of your skin, and the way your sweet face looked.
“I will never forget you, Ken Jr. Your mama loves you.”
Gina took the letter from her husband, folded it neatly, and laid it beside her son. She kissed his face and once more made a mental picture of her precious baby. Her husband leaned over and kissed him once more and then held Gina tightly as the funeral director rolled the coffin into the chapel.
