‘Well! If life begins at forty, I’ve missed it!’ I think, rather cynically,’ I wonder what fifty will bring, huh?’
My thoughts stray as I conjure up a mental list of all the things that make me aware that I am not the ‘chicken’ I once was.
I know I am of middle-age when I have to reach for the blonde colour pack from the chemist’s shelf to hide all those ‘platinum’ hairs on my head that shine in the sunlight, and that glow in the dark!!
When I bite on a sandwich of sunflower and seed bread, only to find I’ve eaten half of one of my molars because the enamel has worn thin, I know I’m at the end of forty-something!
A visit to the osteopath because my spine is 'wonky' and all I did was reach down to pat a dog, just takes the biscuit really!
It seems like I am visiting the surgery every day when, in fact, it’s once every few weeks, but that’s too much as it is!
And then, I’m referred to the opthamologist because my eye pressure has been found too high. Now really! Isn’t that just so ‘short-sighted’ of the optician, especially as I’m only forty-nine!
‘You do have a slight hearing loss in your right ear, my dear,’ the ear, nose and throat consultant informs me, smiling ever so wryly. ‘but, we will see you again in six months to re-evaluate the situation.’
‘What was that you said?’ I joke, trying to remain cheerful!
I am brought back to earth with a bump! ‘Mrs M. Your prescription is ready for you. Would you like to come through and get them?’
I tidily place the magazine on the top of the pile, hoping that some other forty-something will come and be ‘positively’ cheered up by ‘Life begins at forty!’
‘Now, Mrs M, we have all the pills you need in here, except your blood pressure ones. Your migraine pills are there; and we’ve made up a small prescription for your labrynthitis. Oh and there’s…………..’
I wander out with my prescription pack feeling quite dejected and as I sit at the wheel of the car, I mutter to myself, ‘Never mind your DF118’s or your Platelet’s 300!’ I open my bag and take out a P34/18 pill and a P91/16 dose and swallow it …fast! After all…………..I need it!
if you haven't deciphered P34/18 and P91/16 get your Bible and read my 'daily dose!' Psalm 34:18 & Psalm 91/16 onwards.
