"Momma, Momma," her breathless cry let me know she'd run all the way up the back hill. "I caught one, I caught one." A smile swept across her freckled face. Her hair was tousled and swept away off to the side, "momma, momma; I caught one, " she repeated. "What honey?" I questioned. "A lightening bug, look at how he lights up." I watched the little bug crawl around her tiny fingers, she shook him a second and he lit up. "Momma there are so many, they're all over the back yard. Can I have a jar to catch them in?" I opened the closet and pulled out an old mason jar and handed it to her. I watched her run out the back door and down the steps. I walked out onto the back deck and heard her yell to her brother, "I got a jar." The summer night was cooling a bit and the honeysuckle was thick in the air. The tree at the end of the hill looked like someone had put Christmas twinkle lights in it. They ran around and around laughing and jumping, "I got one" would erupt from the laughter every once in awhile. The dog was running in circles at the joy she seemed to feel. Soon the jar was full and they came running up the stairs. " It would be fun to have as a night light," she exclaimed. I watched the jar full of life and light. One bug would light up and then the next and the next , it was as if each one was telling the other something. Each one was so small but together they lit up the jar. "Yes, honey, it would make a good night light."
