People try to help you every day. I am one of those people. I work in a furniture store as a salesman. My job is to convince people that I am not after their money when in fact, that is exactly what I am after.
Oh, don’t get me wrong...I want to provide a good service and make the customer satisfied but let’s face it...I want to make the sale because if I don’t, my wife will not be happy if I come home without my paycheck.
It’s hard too, because I know that people think of me as a money grubbing bandito, when in fact, I know that they come into my store to buy furniture. I mean come on. The sign on the store offers furniture for sale. Did they expect me to NOT offer them furniture??? “I see that you have your eye on that sectional ma’am. Well It’s not for sale. You say you’ll give me three thousand dollars for it? Sorry, I just couldn’t part with it.” Meanwhile, my boss is grinding what’s left of his teeth loudly enough to be heard over the construction workers, who are, even as we speak, taking planks out of the ceiling because I have let the store slide into bankruptcy.
I think that the issue here is trust. I need to get the people to understand that they can trust me not to juice them. At the same time, my boss needs to understand that I will get him the best possible price to keep us in business.
At the risk of simplifying things too much, isn’t that what Jesus had to do for us?
God created us and we sinned. There was a price to be paid. Jesus was sent to convince us that a “white sale” was in progress. People thought He was a fraud. He gave us the absolutely finest price in eternity when He came to earth as a baby. Still we doubted. He freely gave us the unvarnished truth, and we suspected.
And when we looked at what He offered with a jaundiced eye, He shed His precious blood as a down payment so that we could have eternal life.
He was not after praise. He was not after our money. He was after His Father’s business because He knew that His Father would not be happy...
If He came home without His paycheck.
