I awoke on a note of joy and sorrow,
Having dreamt of a tale I’ll sing again tomorrow;
From Europe towards America when flowers were in bloom,
A sharp note of happiness turned out to be a melody of gloom.
An so before the ship set sail,
The composers had worked out all the notes in the scale;
They had the tunes all put together
Except that there was very thick weather.
I walked on board to melodies sweet,
The men in uniform shook hands to greet.
It seemed so adventurous!
Yet there was the unscrupulous;
Noble men and women, rich and poor,
“Happy Maiden Voyage”, as they went through the door.
Ladies to wait, others with lovely gait,
Diamonds, spades, queen of hearts;
Loves’ groundbreaking for sweethearts.
Ta-na-na, ta-na-na, they waltzed around
Graciously to the orchestra’s sound;
Exotic tables for the cultured to dine
Most delicate meals and the finest wine.
“S W I S H ! S W I S H ! S W I S H !”
Suddenly, waters gushed into the ship.
An iceberg had hit in the middle of the night,
Indeed that was an awful fright!
Said the Captain, swiftly turning
“Let the lights be burning.”
The siren pitched at a crescendo, singing
Musical notes which like bells were ringing
“Quuuuuuick! quuuuuuick! quuuuuuick! quuuuuuick !”
The Captain tuned his voice and found the pianissimo key,
Took a deep breath in and said to me:
“Tune your life jacket marked the HMS Titanic,
Whatever happens, just do not panic.”
“Captain Smith, This must be a myth! How long can I hold a single note?
Tune my jacket, but where is my life boat”?
“The time for sinking is not very far,
This ship will be sinking hard, just look at the bar”
While many had thought the Titanic could not sink
They never would have guessed they were at the brink.
The Captain tapped his head with a one, two, three !
His hand in the air, “Have mercy on me”!
But as he spoke he used the right tone,
Though he knew in a jiffy that hundreds would be gone.
So more than two thousand blended their voices,
Surely they thought they had made the wrong choices.
Bum-pi-ty, bum-pi-ty, they went to the boats singing;
The children’s voices: rat-at-at, rat-at-at
As they ran frantically, this way and that.
Boat number six was ready to leave,
But one man was trying the others to deceive.
To disguise himself his cloak he used
But was given away by his gentleman’s shoes.
They pitched their voices those left behind
The night was terribly cold, cruel and unkind
The voices had a quality rare
As if to say, ”What shall I fear?”
They stood in dozens, some almost frozen
Singing “Angels to Beckon Me,
Nearer My God to Thee.”
The angry waves sang and the instruments played,
To an ocean filled where dead bodies swayed.
Oh what a night in history’s life
Of heart-felt sorrow, struggle and strife !
But out in the ocean there was a Christian named John,
Going down beside him was an unsaved one;
“Take my jacket”, sang John, in a voice very bold
“So that you may forever sing on the streets of gold”.
