“Wow!” Kelli exclaimed as she sat up in her bed and gazed out the window of her room at Anderson Hospital. “Wow, mom look!” she said as she rose to her knees and pointed excitedly. With tears streaming down their face, Jim and Cathy laughed as they witnessed a long awaited miracle for their little girl. She was finally able to capture the beauty that had so long been described to her.
Cathy had endured a painful pregnancy. The delivery was almost fatal for their bundle of dreams. However, their beautiful little girl was finally able to make the venture to her long awaited nursery. There they prayed daily for God to heal Kelli, let her grow and have a normal life.
As the months passed, they faced many disappointing visits with Kelli’s pediatrician. Their faith was often shaken, but they never gave up. Their family and friends were constantly assuring them of their prayers. The entire community adopted Kelli as their little miracle and decorated their small town with “Pray for Kelli” posters.
Everyone was brought to their knees the day Dr. Landingham verified Jim and Cathy’s worst fear. Kelli could not see. The beautiful little bundle of joy with eyes as bright as the sunlight was actually living in a world of darkness.
Although Kelli couldn’t see her surroundings, Jim and Cathy were determined to let her see the beauty through their eyes. They taught her to feel the green grass under her feet and smell the sweet fragrance of the deep red roses. The big yellow and black sunflower was her favorite, she loved the size of it.
It almost seemed as if Cathy was preparing her little girl for a big test that she would soon have. Kelli memorized all the colors though she had never been able to peer through her darkness. She knew her hair was blond, the car was white, and the family’s Boston Terrier was black and white. To here her describe her colors one would never know she could not see.
It was just a typical visit with Dr. Landingham. While waiting on Kelli’s name to be called, Cathy held Kelli close talking softly into her ear. “Feel mommy’s bright pink purse?” she said. Cathy tried to quiet Kelli as she loudly described her blue jeans, her red shirt and white shoes. “What color is your shirt mom?” she questioned as the receptionist called Kelli’s name and led them to the exam room.
Dr. Landingham entered the room rather quickly with a packet in his hand and a big smile on his face. “I think we may have good news,” he exclaimed. “There is a new procedure that has been tried and proven successful on several patients on the west coast and I have spoken to a surgeon who is willing to fly in from LA to see if we can help little Kelli with a miracle.”
Cathy sat there holding her daughter tightly as tears flowed down her face. Kelli sat quietly not knowing what was about to happen. “Let me call Jim,” Cathy cried.
Within minutes Jim was bursting through the door with tears in his eyes. He grabbed his wife and daughter and held them closely. Together Jim and Cathy cautiously thanked God for what seemed to be an answer to their prayers.
The day quickly arrived! Jim and Cathy embraced and prayerfully awaited the report from the Doctors. “Would it be worth putting their little Kelli through all this pain?” they questioned. “God, please!” Cathy cried as her tears fell onto Jim’s shoulders.
Soon Dr. Landingham and the visiting Surgeon pushed through the doors with confidence. “I think we were successful,” they exclaimed. “We will be able to remove the patches tomorrow morning.”
The sunlight was peeking into the room as Cathy and Jim watched the nurse gently remove the patches from Kelli’s eyes. The look on Kelli’s face as the nurse backed away less than comforting. Jim and Cathy’s heart sank. Disappointment was slowly setting in and the silence filled the room.
Cathy slowly reached to touch her little girls hand as Kelli smiled. “Mom, I love your red sweater!” she said. “Mom, you are beautiful!”
For the next few minutes Cathy and Jim pointed around the room and outside the window reminding Kelli of all the colors she had learned, and could now see. “See Kelli, it is a colorful world isn’t it!” Cathy exclaimed as Kelli smiled.
