Fall is absolutely my most favorite time of the year! The crispness of the air and the beauty of the colors of Fall as seen in the leaves, the flowers, and even the weeds are what makes Fall a special time of year for me. I love to go for a walk in the woods on a cool day wearing my favorite fleece sweater, take in the smells of Fall, listen to the crunch of fallen leaves under my feet, and watch the squirrels scurrying around filling their nests with nuts for the Winter. An occasional glimpse of a deer is always a treat, too.

We humans know it’s Fall by the calendar as well as the sights and sounds of the season, but it’s amazing how the squirrels know it’s time to stock their nests, and how the bear knows it’s soon time to hibernate for a long Winter’s sleep. Who but God could orchestrate all that for us?!

The cooler weather of Fall refreshes me and gives me new energy to accomplish daily tasks and even tackle those projects that I ignored all Summer. When the wind begins shaking the leaves off the trees and I watch them float to the ground, I’m reminded of how I need to shake off some of the attitudes, habits, or other things that get in the way of my relationship with God and others. When they are gone, then I can start over, allowing the Spirit to flow through me once again, and be ready to bring forth fresh fruit in the next season of life.

For me, there’s nothing like sitting by a quiet stream or brook, watching the water flow over the rocks, and travel on down stream. The sounds are soothing to my soul. The touch and taste of the water are refreshing. It’s amazing how the effects of water can either make a stone smooth or put holes in it and make it rough. It’s the same water with different results, and that reminds me of what Paul tells us about the tongue and how it affects the hearer of our words.

Fall is most often associated with going back to school, football, hunting, Halloween, and Thanksgiving. For years I’ve associated Fall with annual housecleaning in which I washed, polished, and cleaned the house from top to bottom. It’s a lot of work, but the reward always comes at the end when I can sit in my lounge chair and watch the leaves changing colors through a clean window, and feel that sense of accomplishment, that my house is as refreshed as my spirit.

Spring with its fresh green grass and flowers doesn’t compare to the beauty of the vibrant warm Fall colors. Summer with its heat and humidity doesn’t compare to the refreshing breezes of Fall. Winter with its blankets of snow and sparkling ice doesn’t compare to the sights and sounds of Fall.

Give me a cool Fall day, a stream, a basket of brown, orange, yellow, red, and green leaves, pumpkins, and other colorful things, and time to be outdoors enjoying God’s creation, and I’m happy!
