“Good morning Elmer. How are you doing today?” I asked.
“Well, I am not doing so well. My legs are giving me a lot of trouble. I just feel weak.”
This was the normal weekly conversation with Elmer. However, on this particular morning, I felt impressed to respond to him in a way that I had never responded before.
“Elmer, I want you to know that I have been praying for you. I know that you live in pain everyday. While the pain in your body on this earth is unbearable, there is coming a day when Jesus is going to step out on the clouds of glory. The pain you are experiencing right now will be gone! You will be with Jesus forever.”
With a bight smile and a tear in his eye he said, “Amen. I am looking forward to the day when I will be with Jesus forever.”
The next Sunday morning, I was in the auditorium making final preparations for the worship celebration. Walking into the auditorium, Elmer stopped to shake hands with a couple seated in the back row.
“How are you doing today?” Charley asked.
“The Bible says ‘My help comes from the Lord.’ I am here today because of His strength in my life.” replied Elmer.
It is an encouragement to me and the rest of our church family to watch and listen to Elmer as he encourages others even while living in pain.
