“It’s for my daughter’s birthday. I need a nice dress for her,” I said with pride whilst perusing the nice dresses displayed in the shop.
“How old is she and what is her size?” quizzed the seller.
Momentarily I was confused. As a father I know my dear daughter’s age. She has turned 11 on the 4th of the month. But her size? “Uh, uh,” I muttered, “her size, I am not sure, but she is 11 years and she is fat and tall.”
“Ok, this will go for her. This is her perfect match,’’ offered the woman as she pulled out a beautiful dress from the pack.
But I cannot buy for her alone leaving out her junior sister and small brother. I bought the same color for the sister and a blue-jean short with a white T-shirt to match for the 3-year old brother.
There was joy and excitement when I returned home.
“Thank you God for bringing Dad back home safely and for the dresses he promised buying for us?” was the cunning prayer of Priscilla the junior sister.
With great satisfaction and self approval, I brought out the items and we prayed over them. They ran screaming to their room to put on the dresses. Priscilla came out first looking gorgeous and queenly in her outfit. Emma, the ‘macho man’ came next in his jeans, flexing his muscles. Then Dorcas, the birthday girl, appeared holding her dress.
“What is it my dear?” I quizzed as I feared something might have gone wrong.
“Dad, this is not my size. It can’t fit me,” she innocently responded.
“Oh, God,” I exclaimed remorsefully. “I called myself a loving father but do not know what dress can fit my daughter?” I continued blaming myself.
As I reclined in the chair in a pensive mood, Dorcas came closer and asked, “Daddy what will you do with the dress?”
What will I do with the dress? I repeated as I tried to gather myself and tell her something pleasing. “Yes. I know what to do.” Beaming with smiles I continued, “I would sell it and use the money to buy a new one for you.
“No, dad,” was the curt response. Confused I inquired “Why, my daughter.”
“Let us look for somebody to give it to. There are people who do not have dresses to wear. You remember we learnt at devotion that we should show kindness to people who are in need and God will bless us? I know God will bless you to have money to buy me more dresses,’ she sermonized.
“I am proud of you, my daughter, God bless you for challenging us to put into practice what we learn from His Word.” I managed to utter as I drew her closer into my arms and embraced her heartily.
