Someone has said that music is the background of our lives. I know that’s true of my life. I listen to music while I do everything. It defines the times of our lives, from the lullaby to the dirge at our funeral. Our love, our tragedies and joyous holidays are marked by specific music.
My fondest memory of my mother from childhood was her beautiful voice singing “It Came upon a Midnight Clear”. When she finished I’d beg her to sing it again.
When she wanted to make me laugh it would be “Mares Eat Oats” or “Jambalaya”. Every morning as a child I’d wake up to the sounds the farm report and old country music. Saturdays and Sundays would bring music TV shows, Lawrence Welk, Tennessee Ernie Ford, and several Southern gospel groups.
When I was young we didn’t have our music so portable. Yes I remember record players and transistor radios. My grandchildren carry their music with them in ipods, small cd players, etc. I just carried mine around in my mind and soul. They go down the street bouncing to the sounds coming from earphones; I bounced to the sound going around in my head. Now I carry my music to work too, but I still use the music inside as walk down the street.
As I grew up my family considered music to be not very important to life, but they felt differently when Elvis came along. We do that too. We take for granted our music and theirs until we are suddenly shocked by the words coming from their devices. Maybe that’s because music is more important than we realize. We know we are what we think. When my granddaughter is in her own world and is moving to music, it is affecting the person she will become. It is the background of her life, now and later.
