In the crisp, winter air, the leaves and twigs crunched beneath my feet as I made my way down the winding path to the river at the bottom of the wooded hill. The sound of the water rushing over the rocks swelled with every step I took. All around me I could hear the melodies of various songbirds fill the air, and I could not help but smile as their songs lifted my spirits. I took my seat on the bench beneath the trees near the river’s edge, lifted my face to heaven and closed my eyes, lost in the symphony of creation and the greatness of the Creator, Elohim. Suddenly from behind me, I heard the great cry of a hawk, opening my eyes to see it circling above. I was amazed at how perfectly creation was offering praise to its Creator, each created thing an instrument, playing its part in perfect harmony with the next, accompanied by the perfect percussion of the wind sweeping through the trees.
At the bottom of that wooded hill, I felt so small, so insignificant, so imperfect, and yet, at the same time, I felt seen by the Creator, El Roi, the God who sees. It’s almost as if He was singing a love song to me. The Holy Spirit brought His words to my remembrance, indeed He sang them to my heart, each verse addressing a need I faced that very day. He sang of how much more valued I am than the birds, and that if He cares for their needs, how much more He will care for mine (Luke 12:24). As I watched the hawk sore above, I was reminded of the eagle and He sang to me the promise that those who wait upon the Lord will gain new strength, mounting up with the wings of eagles (Isaiah 40:31). In the rushing of the river as I sat beneath the trees, I heard the words of the Lord sung directly to my soul, “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord and whose trust is the Lord. For he will be like a tree planted by the water, that extends its roots by a stream and will not fear when the heat comes; but its leaves will be green, and it will not be anxious in a year of drought nor cease to yield fruit†(Jeremiah 17:7-8).
How tender and personal my God is, that in the midst of all the beauty and majesty of His creation He took note of a small, fragile woman sitting by a river, and stopped to meet with her, to sing to her a song of His love and care. As I made my way back up the hill, I listened once more to the songs of the birds. They sing because that is what they were made to do, each song designed by their Creator to bring Him praise and glory. I, like the birds, was created to praise Him and bring Him glory. I sang to God in my heart, a simple, quiet refrain of prayer, that as the birds, by His grace I would do what He made me to do, to His praise and glory alone. My song of love was a simple echo to His amazing symphony, for I am only able to love Him because He first loved me (1 John 4:19).
