On the second verse, I hear her singing with me. “And the melody that He gave to me, within my heart is ringing.” Tears come to my eyes as she hums and sings along. I stroke her hair, kiss her forehead and watch as her eyes begin to droop. Pretty soon she is fast asleep.
As I hold my sleeping child, I think about the words to the song. A picture comes to my mind. I picture a beautiful garden with lush trees and beautiful flowers. It’s a place where the roses smell sweet and the daffodils lift their golden faces to the sun. I picture walking and talking with Jesus. I hear the birds singing, their notes a sweet song of worship to their Creator. Then in the quietness of the garden I see evidence of God’s love for me, but in my life, do I take the time to worship God in the Garden? As I look at Bethany asleep in my arms I smile. I see God’s love, evidenced in a small child. She has taught me more than I can imagine.
One thing that I learned from her is to take the time to stop and smell the roses. I picture the garden again. This time there is laughter and singing as my children play amongst the trees. They sing worship to God as the birds trill out the melody. I watch as Jesus takes Bethany by the hand and shows her a bird’s nest and the squirrels playing tag in the large branches of an oak tree. She laughs as a butterfly brushes her cheek. Jesus looks at her and smiles as her laugh fills Him with joy. I worship God in the Garden through the eyes of my child. In life, do I take the time to get pleasure out of the little things?
As an adult, how many times do I rush around and forget to take the time to be alone with God? How many times do I get so busy that I don’t take the time to pray? How many little blessings do I miss in my fast-paced busy life? Do I take the time to listen in the quietness of the garden? Do I take the time to worship God with my whole heart? Do I take the time to see His love around me? These questions run through my mind as I put Bethany in her bed and tuck her in.
I kiss her again and whisper, “Thank you for the lessons you teach me.”
“And the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known.”
God’s joy fills my heart and a melody remains on my lips. As I go about my day, the secrets I learned in the Garden whisper softly in the background.
