They did not forget what day it was. After breakfast they started the journey. It was like a journey into pain, into a past, which stored up a lot of sorrow. Each scar on Arthur’s face and leg seemed to erupt into violent recognition of its occurrence. Stella put her arms lovingly over him and pressed his scarred face into her own. Finally they reached the place.
Both their parents were neighbors and great friends and Arthur and Stella grew together. Not much was traced, but overnight they became enemies. The closeness only fed the rupture and the enmity grew into monstrosity. Arthur and Stella wanted nothing of this and neither did their mothers, but they had no say in a society, where the men alone mattered. Once when Stella had gone to the town, a little argument broke out, growing into a squabble and what should have been put out gently, flamed into a show of might. A fire accidentally broke out and both the families lay trapped. Soon, a badly injured Arthur could only move so far to reach Stella’s father and then the dying man, holding Arthur’s arm whispered over a bout of coughs, “I am sorry. All this should never have happened. We were both wrong. Arthur dear boy, make me a promise, that you will live and take care of Stella and once again spread the love and joy we as families shared”. And then a burning figure rolled over to them. It was Arthur’s father and he could barely speak, but took Arthur’s hands in his and held Stella’s father also, in a loving grip. After a look shared between them, they arose and pushed Arthur away with a great force. Landing a good distance away, he turned to see two men holding each other, symbols of forgiveness and love but whose anger had caused much ruin and pain. Then his eyes closed. Many weeks later Arthur could walk again, though his face bore the marks of pain and anger. It was Stella, sweet Stella who had found him, sitting by his side day and night and bringing him back to face the world.
It was a grand marriage and they settled down far away from the old place, which bore much memories of pain. Now after two years they stood near the graves of their parents with their little son. As both of them sat, running over the sad past, their little son collected some flowers, grasses and twigs and with a loud shriek ran over to the graves. As they watched astonished, he scattered all of them in a random design of childish nature over the graves and taking a step towards them, raising his arms in love, blabbered, “Papa” and then with one more step erupted into a giggle, which ended in the word, “Momma”. As they both lifted their little one, whom they had named after both their father’s, they felt a great sense of peace. The pain receded and in its place a quiet sense of fulfillment came in. As they walked back to the wagon they could picture two men, hand in hand with their wives by their side smiling lovingly. Their last wish was fulfilled.
