Often are the mornings where praise and worship rhythms lilt from the bath as my bride readies herself for our workday.
A pleasant date night for us may be as simple as a shared ice cream sundae and short trip to the Christian bookstore where she can pour over latest accompaniment tracks while I browse through the shelves of best sellers.
There is something immensely satisfying about skimming through an interesting and weighty book while a beloved and familiar voice wafts through the aisles carrying the words of an ancient hymn.
Indeed, music is a welcome muse in our home and our life together.
Now, lest the reader think that we are an equally gifted couple, let me make it perfectly clear that my wife is the singer of the pair. My abilities rest more in the technical aspects of the art. I understand the knobs and slide switches of the soundboard much better than the treble and clef marks of the song sheet.
Over time, this has led to a happy blending of skills. She stands up front with the choir; I hunker down in the back with the electronics.
Now, at this point, the reader would probably not be surprised to learn that much of our leisure time is indeed spent with the choir.
Most Monday nights, in fact, one can find us at choir rehearsal. Occasionally, one can also find unexpected blessings and foreshadowings of heaven.
Such was the case not too long ago as the choir went over some technically challenging songs. The altos of the group had been particularly worked over by the arrangement and much effort had been spent getting it all right.
But, oh, did the effort pay off.
The choir director motioned for me to start the music track just one more time. She turned to the choir gave them a confident thumbs up and then the music began. Angels must have sidled up behind them at that point, because they sounded out-of-this-world good. They knew it too.
When the song finished, the smiles and hugs lit the sanctuary up.
Then, it happened. While everyone was celebrating, the choir director ran back and slipped me an unmarked CD. She told me to start it with no introduction and to start it loud.
The first notes broke over the excited buzz of the singers and there was a momentary pause. Then the rhythm kicked in and everyone began to look around. Then they began to move and suddenly there was a dance party to God going on.
I could not help but marvel at the situation in front of me.
Young and old, educated and barely so, retired executive and struggling single mother, every race and every tongue – all dancing and singing an anthem to God Almighty with joyous abandon.
It was a moment to behold and a memory to hold onto forever.
Yes, music is always welcome in our home. And when it brings glory to the Lord, even more so.
