“Mommy, is God’s footsteps really the thunder or is that just part of the song?”
They were on their way to an interview at a potential primary school and Sarah was running late. “Ben, I don’t have time for this now, I have to concentrate on my driving.” She sped along the highway, watching the clock and the road, mumbling, “The left lane is the slow lane, did you buy your licence?”
Sarah swerved from lane to lane, whizzing past the crawling trucks and “Miss Daisy” drivers, hoping that she would make up time. Her speed climbed to 130 then 140 kilometres per hour and she began to feel a bit nervous, she had never driven this fast with her son in the car but she had no other option.
She thought, “I hope we make it on time. We can’t afford to make a bad impression. This is a really good school. I hope that Ben behaves …”
Ben started singing again, “With wisdom, power and love, our God is an awesome God. Mommy?”
“Ben, not now, can’t you wait until we’ve stopped?” Sarah scolded.
“But I was just going to …”
“NOT NOW!” she screamed and completely lost her temper. “Why do I have to scream at you before you listen? I asked you nicely but … Just leave it,”
Ben fell silent and she felt a bit guilty, wondering what he had wanted. They took the off-ramp leading towards the school and she was forced to reduce speed. As they turned into the Park Lane the steering wheel suddenly spun right around. Sarah braked suddenly and discovered that the wheels would not move. “Not now.” She couldn’t understand what was happening.
Sarah couldn’t move the car. Her steering wheel spun round and round with no effect whatsoever on the wheels. The motorists that she had passed on the highway now passed her and hooted at her. “What goes around, comes around,” someone called out her window as she drove past.
Ben, daring to speak said, “Mommy, what is happening?”
“I don’t know Ben,” she said in a soft voice.
Finally a motorist stopped and assisted. Sarah discovered that her car needed to be towed to a mechanic. She had no other option but to accompany the tow truck driver. She would have to contact the school and make another appointment.
“Our God is an awesome God,” Ben sang happily. Sarah couldn’t understand how he could sing at a time like this. “I guess there is nothing I can do about this now” she thought and listened to her son sing.

Lifting his head from under the bonnet the mechanic said, “You must have guardian angels watching you. If your steering rack had broken on the highway you wouldn’t be standing here now.” Sarah looked at him in amazement. “Our God IS an Awesome God.”
