Topic: Reading (01/25/07)
At the impressible young age of four years old, my oldest daughter, Taylor, was determined with all of her might that she was going to learn how to read and write! She mastered one letter at a time and thoroughly enjoyed learning how to read and spell. Every day I would receive endless questions of, “Mommy how do you spell dog?” “Mommy how do you spell your name?” “Mommy read this to me and then spell it” The endless task of spelling words for Taylor was often draining!

Taylor would listen intently to each story her daddy and I would read her. Often she would catch onto the ending of the story before we would finish! She would memorize the stories and read them to her baby sister. Her dad and I thought for sure she was a genius! Of course she was, she was our first child!

My greatest reward for teaching her this task came one chilly winter day. Taylor was sitting at our dinning room table deeply engaged in her work. Whatever she was doing, was oh so important and she must not be disturbed! A few minutes after she was intently writing on her paper she came running up to me with such pride and joy. “Mommy, I did it!!! All by myself, I spelled....phone!!!!!” She could hardly get the words out of her mouth she was so excited. Thinking to myself about what a genius child I had, what an excellent job we were doing, I happily took her paper from her ready to praise her for her awesome efforts!


To my surprise, I looked down at the paper and tears began to fill my eyes. But these were not tears of sadness, oh no! It was one of those moments that I was laughing so hard on the inside, tears were pouring out of my eyes. I had to turn my head away for a moment and collect myself. Taylor was jumping with joy, she had spelled phone.........or..........Nokia, that should do! I laughed with joy as I saw my cell phone sitting on the dinning room table next to where she was seated. Oh yes, my child is a genius!

Very cute and I loved the ending. Little Taylor probably got the message that she's a genius and was trying to prove it. What a good laugh for mommy and for the reader. Nice work!

HILARIOUS! Very cute. Try using a bit more active voice - e.g, eliminate "would" in the sentece: "she received" instead of "she would receive." A very fun story.

A delightful story! I could relate to it, as my older daughter memorized whole books at the age of three and enjoyed "reading" them to me.
The title also grabbed me--sparked my curiosity. Great job!
