He stopped her and asked her what it was that smelled so good. She replied, “It is fresh baked bread. Would you like to try a piece of it to eat?”
The man took a taste of the bread and asked her, “What is it made from?”
“Wheat,” the lady replied.
“I eat wheat to survive on the mountain; I am the master of wheat.”
The man walked a little further and met a young woman carrying a platter of fresh cakes. Once again he enquired as to what was on the plate that smelled so good and the lady replied, “Fresh baked cakes. Would you like to try one?”
The man tried one and said, “These are even better than bread, what are they made from?”
“Wheat”, the lady replied.
“I eat wheat to survive on the mountain. I am the master of wheat.”
The man walked a little further into the village and met a woman carrying a platter of pastries. Once again he stopped her and asked what was on the platter that she carried and she replied, “Pastries, would you like to try one?”
“These are even better than bread and cakes,” the man exclaimed, “what are they made from?”
“Wheat,” came the answer.
“I am the master of wheat; I eat the essence of it.”
Too often we read our Bibles in the way that this man ate wheat. We read the stories in the same way that this man ate the wild grains of wheat and believe that we are gaining the knowledge that God wants us to receive from it. This man was a fool. He walked away and returned to his mountain to eat grains of wheat for the rest of his life. He didn’t learn to bake bread, cakes, or pastries from his experience.
Jesus told us to seek and we shall find. He didn’t say that we were supposed to seek only the essence of God’s Word, but to go further and seek in all places like Solomon’s lover in Song of Solomon. She didn’t set in her room waiting for her lover to come in to her, she got up and opened the door for Him and when he wasn’t there she went into the streets and the by-ways searching for him. It was not the place for a young woman to be at night by herself, so the watchmen, those people that are supposed to have God’s word in their mouth, beat her, stripped her and left her in a heap in the street.
When we read our Bibles we should look beyond the words, sentences, paragraphs, and stories to get a better meaning of what God is telling us in those books, chapters, and verses. What were the customs of the people in those days that this was written? Why did Jesus say that in that manner?
Seek and ye shall find!
