Three people were alighting from the car. Two were uniformed police officers and the other was… “Oh no! Sister!” I gasped in terror. I was totally caught off guard!
“Why is sister here? Why are the police here too? Had I committed a crime? Had mother made a police report? Oh no…”
Overcame with fear and shocked, unknowing of what to do, I stood up and ran!
“Oh, am I a criminal? Why am I running away? That’s my sister…”
Naturally, on seeing someone running away from themselves, the police officers gave chase. And in less than fifteen meters, I was caught. “Stop running!” one of the officers commanded as I felt a strong hand clutching on tightly to my shoulder.
Fearfully, I squatted down. By this time, sister had reached. And on her face, were expressions of mixed joy, relief and anxiety. “Oh, Jean! We’ve finally found you! Do you know that Mummy is so worried? Everyone is worried!”
“Is she your sister?” another officer asked.
“Yes, she is!” answered sister.
“You have to come back with us to the station.” came the stern instruction of one of the officer. I nodded in fear. Then, he took out a handcuff and closed it down on both of my wrists. “Sorry, I’ve to do this.” mumbled the officer. Totally in disbelief, I stood rooted!
“I’m handcuffed! What? Why? What have I done?”
Following the officers, I went in the back seats of the police car with sister. There was a look of deep concern from her. It was the first time that I had ever sat in a police vehicle. Other than the complicated computer screens in front, it was just like any other vehicles that I had travelled in.
“Oh, I’m in a police car. I’m a criminal. Handcuffed like a criminal!”
“Oh great… this must have run in the blood. During their young days, my elder siblings were once caught for fighting and stealing. They too had gone into lockup cell. Now, its my turn…”
“They were caught for ‘braver’ crimes. Unlike you, ‘attempted suicide’! Total Loser!”
“In the past, I was still imagining that maybe I might be caught for prostitution or drugs or some minor crimes too. But never is it this…”
There were traces of aloofness and bitterness plastered on my face. “Ahaha! All were put into a police car huh… Ahaha…” I unconsciously remarked, with a strange smile of false happiness spreading over my face.
Hearing this weird laugh from me, sister touched and tightened a hand around my arm, as if to calm me, at the same time indicating to me to keep quiet.
“Why can’t I even speak? Can’t a criminal speaks?”
“They will think you are crazy! Remember what you were caught for??”
“Oh great… I’m a nut case!”
The car travelled swiftly on the roads in the late night. The siren was not on. Looking out of the window, cars were zooming past. Whenever there was a red light, I dared not to lift up my head.
“Its so shameful! This then is SHAME! Handcuffed in a police car!”
I was so frightened that someone familiar might just be in a neighbouring vehicle and recognised me!
“Now, then you know what is shame? Is it too late? Serves you right!”
“But… but I never thought things will end up so serious! How am I to know that my mum would call the cops? How am I to know that I’ll be still alive to experience all these!”
The car slowed down and made a left turn. Went over a hump and came to a halt. Engine died out. We had reached the station.
