“Cheri whatever you do when Dad goes to work, keep Uncle Richard inside...” She said
“OK” I replied, in our house we were not to ask why, just do or die.
Yet seeing my questioning glance she took pity.” Dad and I called the VA they have not returned our call, Uncle Richards having another nervous breakdown.”
I was told the first one he had he thought himself God. The second Jesus Christ’s helper, on live TV in Tennessee he renounced my Uncle Robert for not letting him take his nephew to the alter for salvation. That one I remember the Exodus from church was faster than the parting of the Red Sea.
I hurried home from school. My father waved as he headed out the door. “Still waiting.” He mouthed
The Army VA never works fast.
My job, fix dinner and monitor my siblings till Mom got home at five thirty, to know the direction my older brother had traveled, and to keep the younger ones safe, especially from each other.
Uncle Richard came up to my sixty-eight pounds, with his two hundred seventy-five pound frame, wrapping his arms around me; I began to see mental illness for the first time, eye to eye.
“Who do I love the most?” he asked.
I guessed I was wrong; this went on till I got the answer right.
“Who do I love second?”
I guessed, I was wrong again; we went to number ten, than began again, and yet again. On round three my Mother called rescuing me, but allowing my Uncle to escape.
My Mom said she was on her way.
Walking quietly up to my Uncle, I could see the fear in the eyes of the woman whose hand he tightly held.
“Do you know Christ?” he asked
She replied,” No”
He promptly gave her the plan of salvation and asked her again.
“Do you know Christ?”
Her eyes screamed to be rescued, her lips drawn in pain, from the grip he held on her hand.
“Uncle Richard” I asked, “who do you love the best?”
He promptly turned to me, letting her escape. His eye darting frantically looking for his next victim, he bounded after a teenager he saw a ways down the road. I ran to the phone calling my other Grandparents for reinforcements, they kept me on the phone till I heard sirens. Crowds of people were standing staring at the policemen surrounding a car.
“Sir open the door.” They shouted.
I heard my Uncle ask “Barbara who do I love first.”
My mother already having the heads up was able to answer correctly. Unintentionally he was strangling the breath out of her.
The five police cars that lined the streets had a total of six policemen, realizing they could not penetrate his fog, they told my mother when they pounded on the glass to try to unlock the doors. My mother nodded her voice strangled she pleaded for them not to hurt him
They knocked simultaneously with their night sticks; he raised his eyes and arm long enough for my mother to unlock the door. Pulling him from the car they wrestled him to the ground. It took the combined efforts of all six policemen.. The cuffs to small for his wrists had to be put on anyway to control him. Four policemen set on him while my mother explained about the VA and soon he was hulled away for yet another day.
Lying on the ground sobbing like a baby I could hear him with his face plastered to the concrete, “Barbara who do I love the most?”
Passing people milling around getting the facts all wrong, I tried to tell them the truth, they looked at me as if I was a stupid child. Reaching my front yard I began to cry we were ok, thanks to policemen.
Later that year, he was Jesus Christ, and leapt from a three story building. Finally they got his medicine right. To this day the words “Who do I love?” can send chills up my spine
. Thank-you for the force and some would say brutality the policemen used to subdue him, saving my mother to live another day.
In life we say look both ways before you cross the street. I say look both ways at everyone you meet.
