It was one of those days...

I had to fast for a blood test, so I was hungry.

Not only did I have to leave for work earlier than normal, but it was still dark.

When I got to work, I reached for my badge in my purse, and bumped a tin full of mints with nonpareils on them. The tin popped open with mints and nonpareils rolling all over the inside of my purse.

The rest of the morning was uneventful…until lunch time.

I decided to go to my car to eat so I could enjoy the fresh air and make a phone call. After walking to my car and getting in, I realized I'd left my cell phone lay on my desk. I went back into the office for my cell phone and then back to the car.

Again I sat down and reached for my sandwich which should have been in my lunch bag, but I forgot I took it out and put it my desk drawer so it wouldn't be ice cold. So back to the office I went for my sandwich, wasting more time of my already short lunch break.

As I got back in my car, I bumped my thumb against the door jam and the nail split down the middle to below the nail edge. I pulled out my nail clippers to cut the rough edges off, and the clippers broke apart in my hand with a piece falling under my car seat. I was afraid to pull my nail file out for fear that I would poke myself in the eye with it.

Having that taken care of, I picked up my sandwich, took a bite, and went to lay it down to make the phone call, and it fell on the dirty floor of my car.

I looked for my napkin, and realized that must have been in the desk drawer, too, so I made do with sticky fingers.

As I opened my bottle of water, I was praying I wouldn't spill that on myself yet.

The rest of the day was uneventful!

I don't have days like that very often, for which I'm thankful! It was like a comedy of errors!

But I wondered what God wanted to teach me through a day like this! That my days don’t have to be neat and orderly but my attitude does? That little things aren’t the end of the world? That I need to pay attention to what I’m doing? That even though things around me are broken, I have a God who can and will make things right—in His time. That I can only clean the outside but God can clean the inside? That I can anticipate things—good or bad—but God is in control?

That’s a lot of things to learn from one lunch break, but God doesn’t expect us to learn them all at once. Lord, even on the craziest days, keep me aware of what You want me to learn.
