Each night when tucking us in bed.
I needed that assurance, too,
For what my sisters put me through.
My two big sisters slept with me
And I am sure they'd both agree
That I could never understand
What mischief they'd already planned.
So when our mom turned out the light
Our room became the blackest night.
'Twas then my sisters should have said,
"You're safe between us in our bed."
But, no, they started telling tales
Of goblins that were big as whales,
Who came at night and climbed our tree
To snatch a little girl like me.
The goblin loved to take a child
Out in the woods, so bleak and wild
And cook her like a barbeque
So she'd be easier to chew.
I'd slide down deeper in the bed
My blanket covered up my head.
But they kept making sounds and roars
Pretending they were dinosaurs.
Remembering what Mother said
Each night when tucking us in bed,
I tried to think of other things
Than bats with poison on their wings.
One night my sisters told a tale
That made me cry and then to wail.
"If Mother hears you scream and moan,"
My sisters warned, "You'll sleep alone."
But one night Mother heard a roar
And rushed to stand outside our door.
While list'ning as my sisters tried
To scare me, Mom was mortified.
She knew I'd never have sweet dreams
If I was told each night of screams
That big, green goblins made while they
Snatched kids and took them far away.
So from then on, when Mother came,
She'd kiss each one and say our name.
No longer were there any screams,
Because she'd say, "Have Jesus' dreams."

Having shared a bed with two sisters, I really enjoyed this poem.
