Bounded by huge evergreen trees,
We were on our way to Crater Lake,
Hopeful of seeing its famed amazing color.
The temperature dropped steadily
Within the Cascade Range,
Where majestic spruce trees
Leaned against the mountainsides.
Entering Crater National Park,
We passed through Pumice Desert,
Surprised to see flat, light colored land
Amid an all-green world.
Climbing steadily, we saw
A trace of snow become a dusting,
Changing to ground cover
And finally, to snow, piled high.
Through the windows, we could see,
Beyond swirling snowflakes, only fog.
The road iced over,
And to our disappointment,
Visibility faded into a frigid near-nothingness.
Slip-sliding, we found our way to Crater Rim
And gazed toward the now invisible lake.
While we were watching,
Very slowly, the image of the lake appeared,
Gradually filling in around Wizard Island,
A black and white photo
With none of the anticipated brilliant blue.
We went to the gift shop for a postcard
As reminder of the beautiful sight we had missed.
Suddenly, we were startled by a loud shout,
“Sun’s out!”
We rushed with others to the lake’s rim,
Where we thrilled to the awesome intensity
Of this large gem of sapphire,
Dappled by sparkling sunshine—
Totally worth the journey and the wait.
Though the journey of life is filled
With mountains and deserts and storms,
Some wonderful day, the glory of our Lord shall appear—
Totally worth the journey and the wait.
