in such a loving, gently loving, sweet cherishing, thoughtful way,
and I must say,
How astonishing is the beauty of the Lord!
with my morning prayers whispered into the misty dew of dawn,
four doves settled softly before my eyes upon my country lawn.
How astonishing is the beauty of the Lord!
with words, such ancient words, the living Christ came to read with me,
tenderly, so tranquilly, and truthfully and transparently.
How astonishing is the beauty of the Lord!
with songs, joy-filled songs, songs rising from deep within their feathered hearts,
there filled the oak trees, the cardinals, the chickdees, the jays and meadowlarks.
How astonishing is the beauty of the Lord!
with laughter in her manner, a summer’s breeze then came to play,
tossing dandelion angels to and fro throughout the air, as if to say,
“How astonishing is the beauty of the Lord!â€
with her lifetime dream about to be, an orchid bloom then did unfold,
as if a ballerina turning in exquisite elegance in creamy ivory and honey-gold.
How astonishing is the beauty of the Lord!
with a mischief wink, a sassy smile, with eyes of mountain river blue,
a little girl in her tomboy freckled innocence, shouts, “I see you too.â€
How astonishing is the beauty of the Lord!
with the sunshine warm upon my aching shoulders, I do my holy work,
here, in these harvest fields of barley wheat, here in this simple farmer’s kirk.
How astonishing is the beauty of the Lord!
then with the well-earned greying of the day, in the slowing, gloaming time,
the aging light paints my sky in watercolors washes, as if to ring some distant abbey’s evening chime,
so that I might breath one more breath of praise,
How astonishing is the beauty of the Lord!
