Dear Lord, I reckon You could say I'm gettin' up in years.
My eyesight ain't so good no more, and sometimes I cain't hear.
At times, I plumb fergit what I was just fixin' to say,
And these old bones get tuckered out and need to sleep all day.
My mind it takes to wanderin' way back to yesteryear,
I recollect the moments spent with loved ones I held dear.
I learnt to sew with Granny at the Baptist Quiltin' Bee,
And first heard tell of Jesus at my dear, old Pappy's knee.
I loved a listenin' to the rain fall gentle on the eaves,
I'd fall asleep to Mama singin' “Bringing in the Sheaves.”
The years they passed, and I become a woman, fully grown,
And then, Dear Lord, You blessed me with a family of my own.
I lost my husband, Robert, in a battle far away,
You stayed right smack beside me, all I had to do was pray.
When raisin' young'uns by myself, I never felt alone,
With lots of love, and lots of prayers, our house was always “home.”
Children, grands and great-grands are the best part of my story,
Thank God, I know each one of them will be with me in Glory.
Fer shore, I never thought how fast the years would come and go,
Or how Your hand would guide me through the joys and trials I'd know.
I may be up in years, but I ain't scairt of earthly harms,
Not whilst I'm leaning heavy on your everlastin' arms.
These days, I mostly sit in this old rockin' chair and pray,
And think on Heaven, where a thousand years is like a day.
