Away from the gaze of man
A silent revolution begins
Beneath a distant horizon
A spring dawn creeps out
A little earlier, a little warmer
In a soft blue sky
A pale lemon sun
Stays out beyond the winter curfew
Beneath the dark crumble of earth
Small prison walls break open
A splash of life spills out
Above the hard cold crust
A small green blade
Cuts its way into weak sunshine
Beneath the harsh crackle of bark
Sticky and sweet
A trickle of sap climbs inside
Buds punctuate a branch
Burst and bloom
Green gossamer leaves unfold
Beneath warm wings and soft feathers
A tiny earthquake
Heralds a naked, mewling chick
Desperate hunger
Flings open pale pink beak
Insatiable appetite
Beneath the cosy coverings
Of hats and scarves
I catch the scent of new growth
Discarding the layers
I skip and dance through puddles
And spring rainbows
My world changes
The greyscale days
Surrender to vibrant colours
