Mum tells me the story again.
“It was the scariest thing,” she says. “All you children were running over the bridge, that very high bridge with the raging river far below, and everything was peaceful. You all had rocks to throw into the river. Just as your Dad and I reached the bridge we saw that motor bike coming from the far side. It was going way too fast, and we watched in horror as it hit you and you were flung into the air. It was the most awful thing. I was frozen for a moment until I could run and pick you up.”
She takes a big breath. I don’t remember when it hit me, I was only five and I never saw it coming.
“I thought you were dead,” she continues. “You had so far to fall. We grabbed your shoes from where they fell and it was just as well our driver was with us so we could take you to the little hospital in the village while our friends looked after the others. They got you cleaned up and then we drove two and a half hours home to get to our own doctor. Only one of your cuts needed stitches and he was able to use that surgical tape. You were very quiet, but you were alive.”
She shows me the photos again. My scared eyes stare back at me and blood stains the bandages and is all over my t-shirt.
“You look so scared and white, and that bandage around your head looks frightening. But the miracle is that, apart from a few cuts and bruising, you had no serious injury.”
“Tell me the angel bit again,” I ask.
“I’m sure that as you flew through the air, angels came and caught you and placed you carefully back on the ground,” she says. “It was a miracle! I’m so grateful you are still with us and not in heaven yet. You are very special and I know God has spared your life for a purpose.”
I don’t know what God wants me to do with my life yet, but I know it will be something special.
Last month we went back to the village and went on the bridge again, the first time we had been back in five years. I didn’t run this time, but our friend got us to throw some rocks into the water while he prayed. He said it shouldn’t be a place of fear for us.
I wonder sometimes what it would be like if I was in heaven already, but I’m glad I’m still here with my family. And I know they are glad too.
