Trickles slow then
Flows in subtle stream
Gushes in sudden drench
Soaking, saturating,
Precipitating
Inevitability.
No longer cushioned
Slick sliding forward
Following the rich river
Downstream
The smell of birth
Clings to us forever
Soaked in holy brine
Dawning and dying damp
I have embraced a hundred new lives
Sliding toward me
To land safely in my lap
Breathing deep new air then
Wrapped and carefully placed in parents’ loving arms
Safety
Secured.
I too was caught and cradled
Nurtured and loved
Three times emptied into other hands and laps
My babies placed wet on my chest
Their slippery skin
Under my lips
Salty sweet
New life starts clean, unspoiled
Soaked by baptism at birth,
Too soon sullied by sin
I must be cleansed again to
Know from whence I came and to whom I belong.
Body and soul
Floating downstream drowning
Yet
Pulled from the darkness into the light
Gasping and sputtering
Caught and cradled in the hands of the Lord
Washed
And
Saved
Forevermore
