In one not contained by walls,
Where occupants were insects—
The kind that fly or crawl—
They lodged among the leaves and loam
Where each did what he could.
Their tasks, performed in harmony,
Were for the common good.
A gopher mound in fetid fog
Was fringed upon the scene,
Where outcasts— a dung beetle lived
With a stink bug tinted green.
A spectacle, that entertained,
Compelled the pair to laugh,
And while quite rare, this mishap was
An insect judgment gaffe—
Though unconfirmed, the legend states,
That one high-ranking member—
A June bug, in befuddlement,
Appeared in late December.
This threw the whole community
Into a baffled state—
For members of the group worked from
The June bug's timely date.
The June bug's error in judgment,
Produced a ballyhoo—
The worker and the soldier ants
Marched forward two by two.
Then the fodder that they gathered,
Piled in overflowing sheds,
Had prompted them to raze those sheds—
Build massive ones instead.
And the honeybees emerged to gather
Nectar from the flowers.
They got a buzz when finding snow
Instead of summer showers.
Mistiming by the June bug caused
A frostbite for the bees,
The end result was something they
Described as "stinger freeze."
The lightning bug attempted to
Light up the frigid night.
But was shocked which generated
Supernova of his light.
Not to mention what this blunder
Did unto the flea and fly,
When their wings required de-icing
And their flight plan went awry.
The year, already twelve months when
The June bug came along.
The clock reverted back to June
The year— eighteen months long.
It's known that this anomaly
Had taken place before
And scientists are working to
Prevent it happening more.
The June bug once, in February
Appeared, it was reported,
That made the year last seven months,
The year was five months shorted
Causing chaos for the locust
Who had waited thirteen years,
Now had to wait for thirteen more
Before he could appear.
So be wary all ye insects,
If upon the third of May,
The June bug shows his auburn shell,
A new month starts that day.
To be outcasts, the dung beetle
And the stink bug acquiesced,
But the stink bug and the beetle thought
To laugh last was the best.
