When I first heard about you my heart melted instantaneously. There was a deep knowing inside me which I still can’t successfully explain. I immediately knew that I would be involved in your life but was unsure of the extent of my involvement.

Your mother passed away on August 17, 2010 and this news came as a tremendous shock. Your mother complained about breathing difficulties and was rushed to hospital. A week later she was released however she still experienced these difficulties. She returned to the hospital but she would never return to you again.

My darling girl you stayed behind with no one to look after you. Your grandmother’s health did not allow for a nurturing, loving and caring home. Your only other family member, your aunt, had to find a job in an attempt to raise and feed you. Before your mother passed away she was employed at the same company where I worked and therefore I was in a position to employ your aunt to replace your mother.

Daily I would ask about you and I once mentioned that you should come live with us. I regularly got updated on your health and learned that you are not eating and you are no longer talking. Your aunt also informed me that you would get up and go outside late at night. When they asked you what you were doing you told them that you could hear your mother calling you.

On Monday, October 25, 2010 your aunt approached me. She mentioned that she had a discussion with your grandmother and they have decided that it would be in your best interest if you came to live with us. My heart stopped for a split second. All the possible scenarios rushed through my mind. “I have to find a bed!” was the first thing that jumped to mind.

Excitement and panic attacked me simultaneously. ‘What do I do next?’ I immediately phoned your now Daddy and asked him what to do. Without giving it a second thought he agreed with your aunt that you should come live with us.

The night before your arrival a new wave of panic struck as I realized that you do not speak English.

You arrived Saturday October 30th. I could hardly breathe when I first saw you. You looked so helpless and scared. When your aunt had to leave you cried the biggest tears I have ever seen. In what must have seemed a foreign language to you, I tried to comfort you. We had all kinds of toys and books ready for you and all this helped us in easing your pain. Soon the tears dried up but there were no signs of a smile, only a scared little girl unsure of her surroundings.

Four weeks after your arrival our communication system still brought a smile to my face. Your English improved daily and daily we had our giggles when we did not seem to understand what you would like to say to us. My knowledge of your language was so limited that I could only stare at you and smile. Somehow we managed to get along. At times you sounded like a babbling brook when that sweet little voice could be heard singing a song in your native language.

As your newly adoptive mother we shared a universal language called the language of love. I didn’t need to know the words to show you how much I have come to love you. One rather big hug with kisses planted across your face amidst your shrieks of laughter confirmed that we spoke the same language.
