“You farted!”
In my most righteous voice I could muster at that time of morning, I responded:
“I most certainly did not”
The scent of skunk had permeated the car and I was not guilty of causing the aroma-this time.
Every day, and even on weekends, we had to drive this road to reach my parents' home so that they could watch Steffi and take her to school, as I had to be at work by 6:30am. She would sleep while I had a time of peacefulness.
Two mornings later, the pre-dawn night was intensified by dense fog hovering in the canyons. I was softly singing with the radio and Steffi appeared to be asleep as I maneuvered my car around an especially precarious curve.
Thunk. Oh no. An unmistakable smell permeated our breathing space.
“Mom, you hit the skunk” Steffi declared as she sat upright in her seat.
“Duh” I thought, wondering if I should check to make sure it was a skunk that I had hit. Common sense said to stay in the car and continue on to our destination. The foul odor lingered for hours and from that day on, we came up with the nickname of P.U. Pathway for that particular stretch of road
Another morning, we were peacefully driving along in the dark when a stink infused the car. A sleepy voice says, “I know where we are.” I did not tell her she was wrong.
