A PRAYER ANSWERED

"I'm hungry, mama." The boy's eyes were hollowed.

"I'm sorry, sweetheart. The cupboard is bare."

"Can we pray, mama?"

"Yes, sweet child. Let's."

They petitioned the Lord with tears.

ding, dong

"Excuse me, Ma'am, but would you care for this pizza? God told me to deliver it."

JEWISH JOANNE

Jewish Joanne, unbiased reporter, covers a Christian women's conference. The attendees' peace and joy moves her to read the Bible through - in three weeks. She has many questions, so she gets churched and mentored.

After several months, Joanne rereads "by His wounds we are healed."

Jewish Joanne is healed.

RELIEF FOR THE WEARY

"I'm so tired, Harold."

Harold rubs Agnes' back. "I know. It's time to stop dwelling. Just let it go."

"Let it go?"

"I have. It's your turn now."

Agnes kneels. "Lord, I'm through with the guilt. Forgive me for my unfaithfulness to Harold. In Your name. Amen."

Peace returns.

FEAR CONQUERED

"I'm afraid, Pa."

"I'm right here, John. You can do it."

"What if I can't?"

"You can."

"But what if I can't?"

Pa smiled. "I'll be here to catch you."

John eases onto his bicycle, sans training wheels.

John smiles. Pa is by his side. John's feet touch the pedals.

THE SCRUNCHY CHALLENGE

"Write a complete story in 50 words or less," Deb challenges.

"You're kidding, right? I have enough trouble with 750."

"It will be a good stretch, or scrunch, for you," Deb counters.

I pray.

God's inspiration comes upon me.

Stories flow like water.

I am scrunched.

I really enjoyed reading these stories. They were so simple yet held such deep meaning. My favourite is Fear Conquered.
Jasmine's Place 02 Mar 2010
These are beautiful and touching stories with powerful messages. Thank you and God bless you.
Ken John 30 Jan 2009
Super idea, like chock chip cookies.
Vickie Reece 16 Dec 2008
Once again this is great and very touching and it's worded well. Vickie

Well, I was following the link in your button and realized that I'd never read these. So cute-and fun! I loved the last one best of all. ^_^
Clive McLaren 18 Jan 2008
Thank you Joanne for your encouragement. I clicked onto your very short stories; they are brilliant! have you thought or attempted to develop any of them into full length stories? Kind regards Clive

This would make a great writing workshop! Reminds me of the improv challenge in drama class. I HATED it! Of course, only a very talented writer could pull this off! I loved the creative titles on each little tale and especially your ending....my comment is even longer than your stories! 51 words :)
Emily Blakely 26 Sep 2007
#2 and #4 are my favorites, but really enjoyed them all!
Tammy Johnson 26 Sep 2007
Of course I love the last one. I also really enjoyed your personal Jewish Joanne one because it is YOU! Amazing you could fit it in those few words, but how cool that it does boil down to that simple of a message.
Teri Wilson 26 Sep 2007
I like Jewish Joanne! And of course, the homage to our fearless leader. Blessings, Teri
darlene hight 26 Sep 2007
Great job! You packed alot of message into these words. Darlene
Allison Egley  25 Sep 2007
I really liked number 1. You did a great job capturing a wide range of emotion.
Seema Bagai  24 Sep 2007
Joanne, loved your scrunchy testimony and the last story. Great job.
Mo 24 Sep 2007
These are great. I just love stories like the first two. You managed to surprise me in #3. & 4 is just wonderful! (& of course #5 is so true!)
Sharon Henderson 23 Sep 2007
I LOVE "Relief for the Weary"...I did NOT see that coming. The rest were very good as well.
Linda Roth 23 Sep 2007
THE SCRUNCHY CHALLENGE was a good way to describe a whole tribe of writers in 50 words! When my husband heard about the short stories, he was amazed. He's not a writer and can't visualize coming up with one story idea. He said we are dripping with talent. Way to go, Joanne!
Laurie Walker 23 Sep 2007
My favorite is Fear Conquered. I can't tell you how many times I've taken that first step because my Father was right by my side. Now I'm trying to teach my own children the same thing. Well done Joanne (as usual :) ).
Pat Guy  23 Sep 2007
Yay for for #2 - my fav! (among all the other favs) ;) Way to go Joanne - isn't this fun? Didn't know you could do this so well, did you? ;) Well, you aced it!
Kristen Hester 23 Sep 2007
These are great. I really liked hearing your testimony. The fifth one made me laugh. Great job. Blessings.
Jan Ackerson  23 Sep 2007
Joanne, these are FANTASTIC! I like your testimony the best--I'd picked up bits and pieces of it here and there, but this teensy summary is just the bee's knees. And the last one is a hoot, too!
Verna Cole Mitchell  23 Sep 2007
I enjoyed all five, but "Fear Conquered was my favorite." You did it, and you did it well!
dub W 23 Sep 2007
My favorite is number 5. I loved number 2 too, though I know that story and find it moving. But, the last one said it all, just give it to God - the rest is easy.
Linda Germain  23 Sep 2007
Hey...you "scrunch" just fine! I have't heard your testimony, but in those few words can draw lots of conclusions. Well done.
Betty Castleberry 23 Sep 2007
Well Miss Joanne, you wrote these very well. I loved your testimony the most, but they truly were all wonderful. Five stars from me.
Rachel Burkum 23 Sep 2007
Loved 'em! You really made me stop and think. Liked the last one, too. :)
