and my words descend like dew,
like showers on new grass,
like abundant rain on tender plants.
Deuteronomy 32:2
Rain in it’s smallest form is fog – and when I first became a Christian, I felt as though God had wrapped me in His love, enveloping me in the softest grey fog, obscuring all the shortcomings and sins of my former life, wiping them from view as though they had never been; and there was safety here, a place to rest, to reflect, to soak up the knowledge that God, my Creator, cared, He cared about me!
After a time, the raindrops became a little larger, and became mist – the drops still so fine that they hung suspended in the air around me, no longer a soft grey blanket, but a soft filter that changed how I saw the world around me. The mist of His love made the sharp edges of the world around me become softer, angles became curves, the air was permeated with His care, His invitation to step out, to learn more…..and how I reveled in this new feeling!
Still later, the raindrops grew a bit more, and became distinct, falling gently on my world. The rain of His love washed my world clean, and the words in His book came alive, like drops falling on the still water of my heart, and ripples radiated from each new truth I learned – overlapping and changing my heart with His love. How tenderly God tended and nurtured me, how gently His rain changed me, until He knew I was ready and He transplanted me, changing my life forever!
I reflect on this with wonder and awe, at how God knew that at first, only fog would do, only the smallest of His truths would get through – and how quickly He has led me into mist and then rain, and I look forward to when only a torrent will do! And now when I see rain falling from above, I am filled with quiet joy at this reminder of His love!
